Knee pain is one of the most common complaints after 50. Resting completely often makes stiffness worse; the aim is to keep the joint moving without overloading it.

  • Walk on level ground daily at a comfortable pace.
  • Do simple straight-leg raises while sitting to strengthen the thigh muscles.
  • Avoid long periods of squatting or sitting cross-legged on the floor.
  • Use a chair with arms and a Western toilet if possible.
  • Wear cushioned footwear, and keep a healthy weight.

See a doctor promptly if the knee becomes hot, red or very swollen, if you have a fever, or if the knee locks or gives way.
